Currently Funded Projects – General Aspects

tree in light bulb We have the most comprehensive research proposal review process in the industry. A four step review process ensures that the projects AFE funds are relevant to the floricultural industry, carry the highest priority, are conducted by the best scientists in their field, are fiscally responsible, and meet or exceed our expectations. Dr. De Hertogh is a member of the SAF Hall of Fame and Professor Emeritus from North Carolina State University. He is internationally recognized for his outstanding work in floriculture research.

Our pre-proposals are initially reviewed by the SAF Growers Council to be sure they are relevant to the needs of the floricultural industry; subsequently, they are reviewed by the AFE Board of Trustees for prioritization; if the pre-proposal is selected, a full proposal is requested. The full proposals are peer reviewed by scientists prior to being analyzed by the Board of Trustees for cost effectiveness, industry needs, and the projected impact of the research. Finally, the Trustees conduct their Board meetings at sites where AFE funded research is being conducted to be certain that research meets or exceeds our standards. If it does not meet our standards, the funds are withheld.
